In the launch issue of my emagazine, The Modern Goddess I profiled the movie, ‘The Secret’.  By now most people would have heard of this ground-breaking feature length movie, created like a documentary style program with dozens of the finest speakers, writers and philosophers of our time.

The Secret is about the power of thought, the law of attraction, visualisation and your inalienable, supernatural right to have, do and be whatever your heart dreams of; it is pure enlightenment.

Did you know that there is also a book? I have the movie and the book, both are accessible for me when I need to refocus my energies or I need a gentle reminder that I am capable of anything that I put my mind and heart into.

The book is an overview of the movie and includes all the great quotes said by philosophers of the past, and the presenters in the movie. As you some of you know I have a book fetish so I just had to add this to my growing collection. The benefit of this book is that I can highlight points that are relevant to my life at the moment without having to go back and visit the DVD for a specific point. The Secret

Don’t miss out on this great book.  If you’re a book lover you need to add this one to your collection.

If you rest your mouse on the image you can find out more about the price with amazon.com.

Ever been asked what your Star sign is?  It’s a question we’ve all been asked at one time or another.  Your Sar sign is actually your Sun sign because it focuses on the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at the time of your birth.

Astrology is much more indepth then just where the Sun was at the time of our birth but it does give us a glimpse into our own personality, our character as well as a general understanding of the way we tick.

So does Chinese Astrology.  Chinese astrology is based on the luna calendar.  Each Chinese sign lasts more or less for a year, beginning with the New Moon in the sign of Aquarius.  The New Moon can fall any time between January and late February.  This is the time the Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year.

According to tradition, the signs were given their names by Buddha, five centuries before the birth of Christ.  As Buddha lay dying he asked all the animals in the world to visit him and say farewell.  Only twelve did so, and to thank them he offered each one their own year, so they would become immortal.

We also have Goddess signs.  Goddess signs combines elements of Eastern (Chinese) and Western astrology and numerology to help you express your inner goddess.  There are different elements to the Goddess signs that starts with the Goddess Type (moon, sun, earth, warrior, dark), then an Element (metal, wood, earth, water, fire), with provides us with different Goddess Sign Energy (Warrior, Empress, Sorceress, Protector, Queen, Enchantress, Diva, Siren, Huntress, High Priestess, Bewitcher and Nymph).

We cannot forget the men, there are also God signs.

And now we have ColorstrologyAnne at Diva Days explains that Colorstrology is where our birthdate is related to a colour.  As Anne stated, the power of colour is incredible yet it is something that most of us give little thought to.  I know that when I wear red I feel bold, confident and empowered, whereas if I wear black I’m happy to blend in with the crowd.

I can tell you that I’m a Cancerian (and a typical one at that).  I am also a Rooster.  I’m yet to work out what my Goddess Sign is as I need a bit more time to concentrate on the calculation.  My Color based on Colorstrology is Cadmium Orange - I’m romantic, desirable and dramatic.  Not sure about the dramatic but I’ll take the romantic and desirable.

What are your signs?

If you put your hand on your heart and recited the Modern Goddess Motto, then you would be looking for beauty and possibilities all around you.  Here is a story that demonstrates the innocence of a child seeing the beauty and possibilities around him.

It is a nice reminder for all of us to look deeper than what we see on the surface.  Enjoy!

***

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups.  And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of little boy.

“Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

“I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”

“Sure,” said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. “Here, Dolly!” he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.  As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller.

Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up….

“I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy.  He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”

With tears in his eyes, farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully handed it to the little boy.

“How much?” asked the little boy.  “No  charge,” answered the farmer, “There’s no charge for love.”

The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

If you’re joining me in the journey of becoming a modern goddess then I think you would be very interested in anything that is organic or environmentally friendly.  Besides the traditional recycled paper, organic foods, soy candles, natural soaps and natural cleaning products.  You can buy recycled and redesigned clothes, soy ink and paper that is 70% recycled and 30% from re-generated forests.

Over the last 10 years I’ve been very conscious about purchasing environmentally friendly products and at the same time recycling our waste such as paper, bottles, cans and vegetable scraps.

Late last year I bought a trial pack of hemp and bamboo nappies for a pregnant friend and I’ve been looking at clothes that are hand-made using recycled clothes.  Usually I pass my old clothes onto charity, but I’m seriously considering using some of them to make wrap, patchwork skirts and pants.

My goddess friends are also getting in on the environmentally friendly products.  I have one friend who is knitting what she calls ‘Eco Buddies’.  These Eco Buddies are similar to a stuffed doll but instead of using wool, she is using recycled soy products.

Another friend is using grey water, the left over water from washing her clothes and dishes to water her plants.

And Michelle at My New Shiny Shoes, an Australian online shopping directory has profiled a gorgeous range of organic make up called Eco by Nvey.  They have powder, liquid foundation, eye shadow, lipstick and gloss.  The range looks and sounds perfect… everything a Modern Goddess needs to enhance her existing beauty and support the environment.

As a Modern Goddess, what are you doing to help the environment?

Things have been a bit hectic lately because I’m trying to get a lot done before friends arrive from Australia and my holiday away with my husband. The past 2 weeks have flown by and with the arrival of our friends, I’m about to lose 4 days of work but even better, I get to socialise with some great friends.

So in my mad rush of getting things done, I found an email I hadn’t read - perfect timing if you ask me. It’s an inspirational reminder… press play and enjoy!

As women we naturally share war stories, our concerns and our successes, however we need to share more about how we achieved our successes, overcome our concerns, learnt to balance our lives or at least incorporate some ‘me’ time.

By sharing what we’ve learnt along our way, we are not only empowering ourselves but we are empowering others to make a change in their life, or at least encouraging them to try something new every now and then.  Women naturally want to nurture and help others and what better way of doing so through sharing.

As we share our knowledge, we gain confidence in ourselves because we can see where we have come from.  Not only are we able to make more informed decisions but we can choose which path we want to take and show gratitude for the lessons learnt along the way.  The effects ripple through those that you share with.

Over at All Things Scrapbooking, Kylie is portraying a Modern Goddess attitude by encouraging other scrapbookers to share their knowledge and techniques.  This is definitely one of those activities that falls under the ‘me time’ category.

Through Kylie’s passion she has gathered scrapbooking gals from all around the world.  Not only are they sharing their knowledge across countries, each contributor offers something unique which compliments the other contributors.

Now all we need to do is allocate some ’me time’ to read about the different techniques used in scrapbooking… or maybe you have a passion of your own that you would like to become more involved in.

I’m now encouraging you to share… what do you do to schedule your own ‘me time’ in between juggling every day life?

I was sent this by two friends who said… maybe I’ll brighten your day. As I read it I thought, maybe I’ll brighten someone else’s day. There are always lots of maybe’s in our every day life and I sometimes it’s great to have a reminder of the maybe’s.

Maybe… we were supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that, when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.

Maybe… when the door of happiness closes, another opens; but, often times, we look so long at the closed door that we don’t even see the new one which has been opened for us.

Maybe… it is true that we don’t know what we have until we lose it, but it is also true that we don’t know what we have been missing until it arrives.

Maybe… the happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Maybe… the brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; after all, you can’t go on successfully in life until you let go of your past mistakes, failures and heartaches.

Maybe… you should dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go, be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you dream of, and want to do.

Maybe… there are moments in life when you miss someone — a parent, a spouse, a friend, a child — so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real, so that once they are around you appreciate them more.

Maybe… the best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had.

Maybe… you should always try to put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that something could hurt you, it probably will hurt the other person, too.

Maybe… you should do something nice for someone every single day, even if it is simply to leave them alone.

Maybe… giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Don’t expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart; but, if it doesn’t, be content that it grew in yours.

Maybe… happiness waits for all those who cry, all those who hurt, all those who have searched, and all those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of all the people who have touched their lives.

Maybe . . . you shouldn’t go for looks; they can deceive; don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.

Maybe… you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy.

Maybe… you should try to live your life to the fullest because when you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling but when you die, you can be the one who is smiling and everyone around you crying.

I hope this brightens your day!

As I walked to the shopping centre I noticed a couple of big balloons of Peter Rabbit and his friends from Beatrix Potter.  My immediate thought was of my childhood.  I remembered The Tales of Peter Rabbit.  As I walked into the shopping centre, there was a Peter Rabbit stand with the Peter Rabbit plate, bowl and cup set as well as the Peter Rabbit house.  This was all here for Easter.

It doesn’t really feel like Easter here, you do not see a lot of chocolate Easter eggs and there is not a great deal of promotion around Easter. But I thought it would be interesting to tell you a little more about a particular Goddess related to Easter. Did you know that the modern holiday of Easter is derived from the name “Eostre” and the associated myths? Eostre is the Goddess of Spring, Fertility and Rebirth.

Herstory

It is said that Eostre is an Anglo-Saxan Goddess of the Spring Equinox was a playful that would rule over the earth once the Sun King traveled across the sky in chariot marking the end of winter. Eostre came to earth after the Sun King rode and appeared as a beautiful maiden that carried with her a basket of colorful eggs. Eostre had a magical companion; a white rabbit that traveled with her to bring life back to dying plants and flowers and hiding colorful eggs in the fields.

The myths of Eostre vary and some say that she found a little wounded bird in the snow and to help it survive during the winter, she turned it into a rabbit. The rabbit however was still able to lay eggs, which is where the Easter Bunny and the Easter eggs myth started. Then at some stage Eostre became angry with the rabbit and banished it into the stars, also known as the “Lepus” (the hare) constellation at the feet of Orion. Over time Eostre missed her rabbit so she allowed it to visit Earth once a year to lay eggs which were then painted and shared around.

The other myth is that the Pagan Anglo-Saxons made offerings of colored eggs to Goddess Eoster at what they called the Vernal Equinox, a festival in the spring time. During this time they placed the colourful eggs at gravesites as a symbol of rebirth.

When do you call upon Eostre? When you are looking for new beginnings such as new ideas, a new job or project, new goals.

Her image: She is usually depicted outside in the spring time with flowers and a hare or two.

In Anglo-Saxan mythology: During the spring, the Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival in which they commemorated their goddess of offspring of the springtime.

Pronounciation: East-ra

Other names: Ostre, Oestre, Ostara

Today many people across Asia and the world will be paying their respect to Guan Yin, Goddess of Compassion and Mercy because today we celebrate the ‘Festival of Guan Yin’.

For many Hong Kong people, an important festivity is to visit the Koon Yam temple to show respect and offer a sacrifice to the goddess. Also while visiting her they ask for a loan from the divine.

Recorded history on loaning from Koon Yam in Hong Kong can date back to 1956 where there was coverage of a pilgrimage to three major local Koon Yam temples. On this day they believe that the Goddess opens her vault and after paying their respects with joss sticks and candles, worshipers are handed a red paper with a dollar value written inside; the bigger the value, the bigger the earnings. This is part of the loan ritual. Each worshiper leaves the temple carrying a lettuce, some ginger and mushroom as well as paper wind-mills. This symbolized a good ‘turn’ of their fortune.

In another country not far from Hong Kong, locals and visitors will see a calligraphy balloon 36m long and 1.8m wide will float in the skies above Danang city, highlighting what is the largest-ever Guan Yin Carnival in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Carnival will also feature other Buddhist rituals including a 550-strong delegation led by world-famed Zen Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.

If you would like to join in on the festivals and rituals, light a candle and take the time to give thanks for Guan Yin’s compassionate energy. If you want to, you can write down the things that you wish for and ask Guan Yin to help your achieve/obtain them.

Blessings to you!

A little while back I said I felt like Goddess Durga with eight arms, busy doing many things… well, I’m still having days where I’ve got a couple of things on the go and my head is working overtime.

This morning while having my hot chocolate and catching up on my favourite blogs I found that Michelle at Tonic Gifts recently pampered herself.  Her post Pause for a Pamper sounds perfect for all those Modern Goddesses out there.

The thing we don’t do well is pamper ourselves… well, I know I don’t do it often enough and with the amount of work I’ve had on recently, I know I deserve it.

Pampering ourselves is showing us that we care about ourselves, and the pampering bit can be anything that nourises our body, heart and/or soul.  I consider taking time out to meditate for 30 mins as a form of pampering; as is painting your toe nails, going for a walk along your favourite beach, sitting on a swing in your local playground and enjoying the sunshine on your body.

Michelle you have inspired me to pause for a pamper.  I’m going to book myself in for a massage because I do need to lose the tension around my neck.   Who’s going to join me?  and what are you going to do to pamper yourself?
