This poem is written by Valerie Murphy. She thanks you in joining her on a journey of healing and empowerment and asks that you share this poem with others, and pay it forward.

A womans lesson is a simple lesson:
Whatever life asks, answer with love.

A womans lesson is a wise lesson:
Whenever conflict threatens, go forth in harmony.

A womans lesson is a enduring lesson:
Whatever is taken from you, give back in generosity.

A womand lesson is a gradual lesson:
Whenever there is a storm, remain a calm center.

A womans lesson is a courageous lesson:
Whenever there is despair, sow a seed of hope.

A womans lesson is a practical lesson:
Wherever there is dryness, go and get the rain.

empowering women

Welcome to the first issue of Empowering Women, a bi-monthly ‘Blog Carnival’ in which I present 5 articles that demonstrate ways of becoming empowered in every day life.  In a previous post about empowerment, I wrote:

I cannot make you be empowered; you need to look within to be empowered. My role at The Modern Goddess is to provide you with the opportunities, tools, resources and support so you can move forward in the way that suits you and your family.

By providing you with these articles, I am providing you with resources… I hope that you can take something away from each article.  Enjoy!

Wanda Grindstaff at Creating Abundant Lifestyles writes a lot about The Law of Attraction. In her post It’s all about having Fun - Living with Intent she wrote that she was grateful that she woke up and learnt that success had nothing to do with hard work, and everything to do with the vibration she was putting out into the Universe. Wanda learned that the more fun she had, the more money she made, the more she accomplished and it was all about having fun!

Alvin over at Life Coaches Blog provides us with techniques on How to create a Place of Power. He explains that you must build feelings of inner power, strength and vitality inside of yourself daily, even when the world doesn’t give you a reason to.

Kendra Dahlstrom at vbacadventure.com explains that pregnant women can have the labor and birth that they desire. In her article The Great Doula Search she describes the importance of doulas and how they can benefit a laboring woman.

Over at Grad Money Matters the author writes about how a highly respected, financial blogger kept her word and answered 5 questions about Women, Ethics and Personal Finance. The interview is focused on financial issues that we all should consider.

And to finish up take the time to read about How to Get Nothing Done. Christine Kane at christinekane.com gives us a little prod and reminds us about the obstacles we put in our own way! Yes, that’s right… they are obstacle we create.  Now that Christine has made you aware of them, you can intentionally work at overcoming them - remember our mule and being creative about getting around it.

Thank you to everyone that submitted articles.  I had such a great response that I am going to write another carnival in 2 weeks using some of the articles I did not mention in this issue. I would appreciate author’s linking back to this carnival.

You are invited to submit your blog article to the next edition using our carnival form.

Imagine getting out of your bed in the morning and stubbing your big toe, then tripping over a pair of shoes you didn’t put away the night before and then to top it off you drop the milk which spills all over the floor… at this point you can choose whether your day is going to continue down the path that it started or, you can choose to change your mindset and have a great day.

How do you change your mindset? Winston Churchill said “You create your own universe as you go along” so say to yourself “enough is enough… I’m going to have a great day from this point forward” or you could play this You Tube Video by Shawn Gallaway called “I Choose Love”.

Not only will it have you singing along, it will change your mood.

One last thing that I encourage you to think about… in the song Shawn asks, “what do you choose?” “what do you see?” It is important to see everything because you need to be aware of what is happening around you but this song will help you choose love in every moment, which in turn will help shift the worlds consciousness and help other people awaken to the vibration of love. The vibration of love will help us achieve the much needed peace in this beautiful world of ours.

“A woman is the full circle.  Within her is the power to create, nurture, and transform.  A woman knows that nothing can come to fuition without light.  Let us call upon woman’s voice and woman’s heart to guide us in this age of planetary transformation.”  Dian Mariechild

Sacred circles, women circles, ceremonial circles, development circles, spiritual circles… actually it doesn’t matter what label you place on the circle, the main objective of a circle is for a group of women to come together, share life stories, support and challenge one another.  They are micro communities and are a tool for discoverying how Spirit manifests in your life.

Without realising this, Kylie at Oz-e-wahm has created something similar… she has created a community of women who work from home.  They live all over Australia, have different belief systems and have different businesses, but the one thing they have in common is that they are committed to supporting each other.

Our community of women which currently consists of 10 members is supporting each other in a unique way - we are using the internet and our blogs.  Our focus is not about developing spiritually, our focus is to assist Australian work from home mums with their blogging adventures but in the meantime we are learning and developing ourselves in many different ways.

How are we supporting each other?  This is quiet simple actually - once a week a member’s blog is chosen to ’whammy’.  The aim of a ‘blog whammy’ is to increase traffic to each of our blogs.  We do this by visiting the chosen blog, selecting a particular post that resonates with our own blog, and then we write about it and link back to the post.  This causes an influx of traffic and overall an increase in the blogs popularity.  Once we have whammy’d each other’s blog we start again, creating a circle - a blog whammy circle.

Have I got your interest?  We are always looking for new members so if you are interested, visit us at Oz-e-wahm Blog WhammyDon’t be shy, join our blog whammy circle today!

I’m a big animal lover and love to read about real stories of animals overcoming adversity or doing something that is not normally in their nature.

This is a real story that shows that our differences do not matter much when we need the comfort of another.  We could all learn a lesson from these two creatures of the Universe.

hippo and turtleNAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

“It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a ‘mother’,” ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park, told AFP.

“After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized.  It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother.  Fortunately , it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together,” the ecologist added. “The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother,” Kahumbu added.

turtle getting a kiss“The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years,” he explained.

I love the images because you can really feel the love the two have for each other, especially the little hippo.  It’s so beautiful.

The message for everyone is to look beyond the differences of one another and find a way to walk the path together.

Wisdom… what is it?  I see it as gathering my knowledge and experience, and then being able to use that knowledge and experience with common sense and insight.

Wisdomology… what is it? it is a community that values learning and wisdom.  It is a community that encourages you to share your thoughts and insights.  It’s a place where you can have a conversation each day that allows you to support others and be supported in your own personal growth.

Wisdomology gives you powerful personalised ways to pass along your insights, discuss what matters to you and learn from the wisdom of others.

While looking through the site, I found this quote that I could relate to…

Ying and Yang Business Cycles written by James

It struck me this morning that businesses go through periods of expansion and  contraction just like every other natural system.  We just had a period of rapid external/visible progress (yang) and now we’re in a period of settling (yin).

If we didn’t allow ourselves the yin period, we would never build up the strength in our code base and business systems to make another healthy expansion.  Going one direction for too long (usually yang and expansion in the case of business) seems sure to cause some kind of imbalance.

It would be like working out at the gym and doing the same weightlifting routine 7 days in a row - with no time to recover, you’re really not building strength, just wasting energy.

But I think it’s difficult for many people and organizations to allow themselves a yin period - I know it has been for me.  It requires alot of patience.  And it’s not rewarded in our culture.  Nobody goes to a cocktail party, networking event, or shareholder’s meeting and proudly says, “We’re in a yin phase right now.  We’re not looking to expand right now.  We just want to settle into where we are.”  Can you imagine?

It is a great reminder that we all should advantage of our down times, so that when we are busy I’ll have the energy to move through it with a positive mindset.

KunziteWith all my talk about removing obstacles, I thought it perfect timing to profile Kunzite, an extremely spiritual gemstone that was discovered in 1902.  It was first found in the United States of America and can also be found in Madagascar, Brazil, Myanmar and Afghanistan.

This pretty pink gemstone has the power to combine intellect, intution and inspiration.  As a pink stone, it helps work on your heart chakra and is also a popular healing stone.  With it’s pretty pink hues, it has become a popular stone for jewellery.

Kunzite is also a protectvie stone, sheilding the aura from unwanted energies.  This versitile stone can help help remove obstacles from your path, encourage self expression, promotes the quality of tolerance for the self and others, and is helpful in reducing stress related anxiety.

If you wish to enhance your capacity for devotion and understanding and radiate peace then this is the stone you should look for.  Hold the gemstone in your hand when meditating as it helps induce a deep and centered meditative state.

Kunzite is tranparent or translucent, especially when polished.  Pink Kunzite is more readily available but you can also get Clear Kunzite, Yellow Kunzite, Lilac Kunzite and Green Kunzite.

Wear Kunzite over the heart chakra or if you wish to block geopathic stress, tape it to a mobile phone or your computer.  If you wish to alleviate panic, place the Kunzite on your solar plexus (just above your belly button).

Whether or not one actually believes in these positive effects, one thing is certain: its fine pink with a hint of violet radiates a serene composure and keeps moods of depression and anxiety at bay right from the outset.

15th May 2007

I’ve been brainstorming with myself, revisiting my goals and asking myself how can I get around the current obstacles (listed in my previous post).

Let me start at the journals obstacle.  I’ve come to the decision that we walk down both paths - publishing and self publishing.  Send some emails out to publishers to see if there is an interest.  Talk to some self publishing companies to see the cost involved in taking this path.  Then I’m going to leave it open to the Universe.  I’m going to try and give up a bit of control (I’m a control freak by nature) and see which way the wind blows.  I’m going to believe that whatever happens, it happens for a reason and it will be in the best interest of getting our journals published and into the market place.  I will have to remind myself daily of my choice because it could keep popping up if I don’t.

As for my exercise, instead of trying to walk, run or attend aerobic classes, I’m going to swim.  It’s the perfect time of the years… we’re heading into Summer and it’s already humid.  Swimming of a morning will be a lovely way to start the day and I will still get the exercise I need.  Once my ankle is better, then I can get back into my Tae Bo.

By taking the time to reveiw and think of alternative options, I’ve now gone around my obstacles.  These were small obstacles but when the big ones come up, you can easily use the same principles.  Don’t let the stubborn mule like obstacles get in the way of you achieving your goals.  Step around them and continue moving forward.  Good Luck!

Tell me… how are you going to get around your obstacles?

14th May 2007

I recieved an email today that showed a man with one leg dancing the Salsa with his partner and wow… he was amazing!  It reminded me of the story I watched on a television documentary of a mum who had no arms due to an accident but was able to care for her baby using her legs and feet.  She was amazing too.  Then I remembered another story about a blind man who climbed Everest.  Again, another truly amazing person.

These stories and the many more out in the world, demonstrate that when we gather our inner strength and know in our heart that we can overcome the obstacle, we will.  These three people had a goal and they were not going to allow obstacles such as having one leg or no arms or being blind stop them from achieving their goal.

For me, obstacles seem to pop up when I’m half way to achieving my goal or I’m just about to start walking the path to my goal.  I’ve got two recent examples.

The first example is about two journals that I’ve co-created with an Australian artist.  They are ready to be sent to prospective publishers but because they are unique, I’m a little unsure as to how I should present them.  Another obstacle is do we go down the path of self-publishing so we retain all creative control or do we let go and continue down the path of the journals being published.

The other example is my exercise - I haven’t exercised consistently for a couple of months and really need to get back into my routine.  While away on holidays I was getting myself motivated to get back into my exercise when I tripped and sprained my ankle.  It is still tender and swollen so I’ve not exercised.

Both of these examples are obstacle that are in my way and are hindering me in achieving my goal.

Obstacles can be in your face, just like a mule (as I’ve heard someone suggest).  If you can imagine a mule standing in the middle of the road, they are trying to stop your progress, they are stubborn and they won’t go away.  Obstacles are just like that.

I bet you’re wondering… how do you overcome the obstacles?

The most important thing is to continue to focus on your goal.  Do not focus on your obstacle because what you are doing is shifting your focus from your goal to the obstacle, which in turn does not help you achieve your goal.

The next step is to revisit your goal and identify another path to achieving it.  Ask yourself “What are my options?”, “Is this obstacle real or something I’ve generated myself?”, “What can I do to make it better?”, “Is there someone I could bounce ideas off?”

More often than not we are the ones that get in our way.  We can self sabotage because we have a fear - it could be a fear of success or a fear of the unknown.  Whatever the fear, it’s an obstacle.  Self-sabotaging is an obstacle.  You need to delve deeper to find the answers so that you can refocus on your goal and move forward.

Get creative, look for away around the obstacle without losing sight of your goal.  There may be a better way to reaching your goal.  If you truly want to achieve your goal, your inner strength will shine through and move you forward.

I’ll be back to tell you how I’m going to go around my obstacles.  In the meantime, do you have an obstacle that you would like to share?
